3 Things Every Coach Should Do to Keep Practice Simple and Productive
Every coach wants energy, focus, and progress at practice. What most forget is that complexity kills all three. The best practices are simple by design. They move quickly, focus on one clear goal, and create feedback that drives learning without long talks.
Here are three rules that keep practice simple and productive.
1. Define One Goal and One Success Metric
Before practice starts, write down the day’s goal and how you will measure it.
Example:
"2-strike adjustability, hard contact to center field in scoring rounds."
That is it. Everyone should know what today is about and what success looks like. When the purpose is clear, the noise disappears. Players focus on the target, not the filler.
Why it works:
Clarity drives intent. When players know the goal and the metric, every rep connects to something that matters.
2. Run Tight Stations with a Timer and No Dead Reps
Attention drops when players wait around. Split the group into small stations, set a timer, and keep the flow tight.
If a station drags or players stand around, cut it. Every rep should have a reason.
Why it works:
Short, focused bouts create urgency and raise quality. You get more high-intensity reps without adding fatigue or boredom.
3. Build in Feedback Every Rep
Players learn fastest when the environment gives them feedback before the coach does. Use ball flight, a scoreboard, or a quick cue instead of long lectures.
If the ball does what you want, that is feedback. If not, the player sees it instantly.
Why it works:
Immediate, objective feedback trains players to self-adjust. The game tells the truth faster than we can.
Final Thought
Simple wins. Clear goals, fast tempo, and real feedback turn practice from busy work into development. When practice feels game-like, fast, focused, and measurable, players do not just train harder. They learn faster.
